The York Mystery Plays are being performed around the city on 28 June & 5 July, so we are looking forward to hearing Mike Tyler talk about York Mystery Plays: Performing medieval drama in the modern city.

Mike knows York’s Mystery Plays from many angles – having been both a performer and a director of the Mystery Plays, as well as a lecturer in medieval history. Mike will review the revival of medieval waggon-plays, the involvement of the surviving York guilds in supplying performers, the practical challenges of street performance in the face of 21st-century regulations, and dilemmas concerning authenticity re language, costumes and stage sets in a modern era.

We are very pleased to have been able to book Dr Paul Durdin, a local freelance archaeologist, to talk at our June meeting about: A Thousand Years of Stratigraphy: the Ness of Brodgar. While this is definitely outside our area, the Ness of Brodgar is an incredible site of international importance – I know several of you have visited the site during the excavations and found it fascinating. Paul has worked on the site, so can speak with inside knowledge!

You may have seen recent reports in the media that while the main excavations finished last year, new geophysics by Time Team have produced some intriguing results which are to be investigated with a small trench next year. The site that keeps on giving!

Following our AGM, the Marjorie Harrison Memorial Lecture will be given by Geoff Appleby on The History of York’s Stations. This idea came after the talk by Alex Andrews in September about the Station Gateway Project.

As many of you know, Geoff comes from a railway family and worked in the railway industry for 40 years. The lecture will explore the history of railways in York from earliest times to the present day, with extensive archive images.
